Leather guitar straps are timeless classics. People who love leather usually appreciate exactly what makes it special: its distinctive feel, characteristic scent and a surface that develops its own personality over time. Leather looks refined, is durable and can also have a wonderfully vintage appearance.

For premium guitars, classic finishes and natural wood surfaces, a leather guitar strap therefore remains the first choice for many players. Our leather can look a little worn-in, too. The natural grain, minor irregularities and subtle used look give many of our straps their particular charm.

Leather is also associated with comfort. Guitarists looking for a particularly comfortable strap often think of leather first. Yet leather alone does not make a strap comfortable. Even two straps that look almost identical can feel completely different when worn. One may sit comfortably on your shoulder while the other is too stiff, presses uncomfortably or rubs against your neck. Below, we explain what really matters in a comfortable leather guitar strap.

Genuine Leather: A Material You Can See, Feel and Smell

If you love real leather, you probably know the feeling: you pick it up and immediately recognise a natural material. Its feel, characteristic scent, grain and subtle surface variations are as much a part of our leather straps’ personality as their colour.

You can see this particularly well in our Grainy Chestnut Deluxe and the other colours in this range. Pull-up leather has a natural grain and a slightly worn-in appearance. Anyone looking for a vintage leather guitar strap with authentic character will love these qualities. When bent or worn regularly, certain areas may lighten and a unique patina develops over time. The strap is allowed to change – that is exactly what we love about this leather.

Nubuck feels entirely different. Its surface is matte, velvety and especially soft. Its characteristic brushed effect even changes its appearance slightly depending on the direction in which you stroke it. This understated elegance is particularly striking on our Nubuk Deluxe Black.

Because leather is a natural material, no two straps look exactly alike. The grain, texture and minor natural marks may vary. To us, that is part of the appeal: genuine leather should look like genuine leather.

Padded Leather Guitar Strap: What Makes It Truly Comfortable?

Not every padded guitar strap is automatically comfortable. What matters is not just how thick or soft the padding is, but how well the entire strap conforms to your body. Even generous padding provides little benefit if the strap is too stiff or its edges press uncomfortably against your neck.

Depending on the model, our padded leather guitar straps are approximately 6 to 6.5 cm wide and feature soft, 4 mm memory-foam padding. The broad contact area distributes your guitar’s weight more evenly across the shoulder. Just as importantly, the strap needs to remain pleasantly flexible, adapting to your body and playing position without creating pressure points.

The underside matters just as much. Our leather guitar straps feature a textured suede underside that grips clothing considerably better than a smooth surface. This extra grip can be especially welcome with neck-heavy guitars, helping to prevent the instrument from pulling down over your shoulder and keeping it more securely in position.

There is no single perfect strap for every guitarist. Some want maximum grip; others move their instrument more while playing and prefer greater freedom of movement. Your guitar’s weight and balance also matter, and your clothing influences how much a strap slips off your shoulder.

Craftsmanship from Portugal

Our leather straps are made to our specifications in a small specialist leather workshop in Portugal. When choosing this manufacturer, one thing mattered above all: its standards for materials and workmanship had to match Steyner’s.

Every finished leather strap is the result of genuine craftsmanship. The leather is selected, cut and worked by experienced hands. Working with a natural material requires skill and a good feel for it, so the finished strap not only looks beautiful but also feels right and wears comfortably.

We visited the workshop ourselves, saw the production process and selected different leathers, colours and finishes together. Throughout our collaboration, we have repeatedly refined and developed our leather straps to meet our requirements.

Preserving the character of the leather is especially important to us. Natural grain, the pull-up effect of our Grainy leathers and the velvety surface of our nubuck leathers turn each strap into something that becomes increasingly personal over time.

That is how our Portuguese leather straps combine everything we expect of a Steyner strap: premium materials, careful craftsmanship, excellent comfort and plenty of character.

Which Leather Guitar Strap Suits My Guitar?

When choosing a leather guitar strap, colour is not the only consideration. The leather’s finish can also completely change how the strap looks with your guitar.

Our Grainy leather straps, with their natural grain, pull-up effect and subtle vintage appearance, are especially attractive with classic guitars, warm wood tones, sunburst finishes and instruments that already have some vintage character. Chestnut, Coffee and Cognac are among the warm leather tones, whereas black is much more neutral and goes with almost anything.

Nubuck has a softer, more understated appearance. Our Nubuk Deluxe Black is a particularly good choice if you are looking for a simple black leather strap whose velvety surface still gives it a distinctive look. If you prefer a little more colour, our nubuck straps are also available in blue and green.

The strap does not have to match your guitar’s colour exactly. With beautiful wood grain or a special finish, an understated leather strap can complement the instrument without stealing the show.

FAQs about our leather guitar straps

Do Steyner leather guitar straps fit Schaller strap locks?

Yes. Our leather guitar straps have a standard attachment hole of approximately 8 mm and therefore fit ordinary strap buttons. The leather around the attachment is soft and flexible enough for the hole to stretch over larger buttons (such as PRS) and to accommodate strap locks that require a 10 mm strap hole (such as Schaller S-Locks).

There is no need to enlarge the attachment holes on our leather straps: their flexible leather already fits various strap buttons and common strap-lock systems.

Will a sold-out leather guitar strap be restocked?

In many cases, yes. Our leather straps are produced for us by a small leather workshop in Portugal, and we reorder individual colours and models according to demand. Less common colours such as blue or green are therefore not always permanently in stock.

Can I order a leather guitar strap in a custom length?

In certain cases, yes. If our regular lengths are not suitable for you, we can ask our leather workshop in Portugal about a custom length. It is also worth enquiring if the model you want is currently unavailable. Simply contact us before ordering and we will check what is possible.

How do I care for my leather guitar strap?

Genuine leather usually needs very little care. Above all, store your strap in a dry place and avoid excessive moisture or direct heat. If you use leather-care products, make sure they are suitable for the specific type of leather: nubuck needs different care from smooth leather. With our vintage leathers in particular, natural changes and the developing patina are part of the material’s character.
